How to make a pie chart

  1. Describe your data

Give category names and their values, plus a title and unit. For example, give rent 1500, food 500, transport 300, and savings 700 dollars.

  2. Generate and review

Check every category and number against your source. Use nonnegative values and avoid too many tiny slices; combine small categories into Other when appropriate.

  3. Download your chart

Save SVG for scalable documents or PNG for slides. Change the prompt and generate again to revise the chart.

Tips for a useful pie chart

Frequently asked questions

Do my values need to add up to 100?

No. Supply counts, amounts, or percentages. Slice proportions are calculated from the sum of the supplied values; percentages should total 100 if they describe the whole.

When should I use a bar graph instead?

Use a bar graph when comparing close values, many categories, or quantities that are not parts of the same whole.

Can I use negative numbers?

No. Pie slices represent nonnegative parts of a positive total. Use a bar or line graph for signed values.

Is it free, and can I download the result?

Yes. Generate without signup, subject to daily fair-use limits. Download SVG or PNG with no watermark.
